The County Open Space Board paused consideration of a Byrne Plaza redevelopment application on Sept. 16 after the applicant asked to amend plans to increase restroom capacity.
The application was submitted by the City of Wildwood as a surrogate for the Wildwood Business Improvement District (BID). Presenters described a second phase of Byrne Plaza intended to provide more permanent facilities for events, including prefabricated single-stall restrooms, upgraded seating, a food-truck area, fixed tables and landscaping. Triad principal Todd Noone and consultant Marc DeBlasio joined representatives of the BID for the presentation.
Board members and the project reviewers raised concerns that the single-stall restroom design might not meet expected demand during large events. Mr. Andrew Shawl of RVE flagged ADA and circulation concerns; the BID said the area can be managed to minimize congestion. Several board members, including Peter Lomax, David Craig and Neil Byrne, suggested the applicant explore options to increase year-round restroom capacity rather than rely on portable toilets for events. Board member Ronald Simone said any option to improve facilities should be investigated.
After a brief sidebar, the applicant requested the application be tabled to amend the plans to include additional facilities. Mr. Lomax told the applicants the board would provide guidance on what could be covered by the grant and warned that project costs would increase because of extra architectural, engineering and building expenses. No formal vote was taken on the application at the meeting; the board said the application would be heard again once amended.
