The McFarland School District board completed a first reading Sept. 15 of a multi-policy update packet that included clarifications, rescissions and consolidations across administrative and personnel policies. Among items presented were updated definitions (0100); board member behavior, communications and code of contact (01445); consent agenda procedures (01661); several personnel leave policies (3120.08; 3431; 3432; 4124; 4213) and corresponding support-staff policies in the 4000 series. Administrators said several of the items are rescissions: detailed leave rules and similar operational items will be managed in employee handbooks and administrative procedures rather than in board policy to allow more timely updates. Administration also proposed adding clarifying language to fitness-for-duty/unrequested leave language to specify applicability to administrators (referencing the district policy definitions). The board asked clarifying questions about student supervision and emergency duties, and administrators explained that the changes are technical or procedural rather than substantive policy departures. Board members moved and seconded the first reading of the packet; the first reading passed. Any substantive changes will be reviewed again at second reading before adoption.
