Palm Beach Lakes band asks commission for sponsorship to perform in London; commissioners express support

Joshua Ve9lez, director of bands at Palm Beach Lakes Community High School, asked the West Palm Beach City Commission on Sept. 15 to consider sponsoring 10 to 20 students for the school's invitation to perform in the London New Year's Day Parade. Ve9lez said each student's trip cost is about $4,000 and that sponsorship of 10to 20 students would total $40,000 to $80,000. "This is more than a band trip. It's an investment in exposure, in confidence, in the belief that our students belong on the world stage," Ve9lez said, asking the commission to consider partnership or financial support to ensure financial barriers do not prevent students from attending. President Lambert responded directly to Ve9lez, saying, "I'd like to do whatever we can to help support. So we'll be in touch." Commissioner Ward and Commissioner Warren also expressed personal support for the students and said they would follow up on potential funding avenues. Commissioners asked staff and Ve9lez to provide materials and fundraising details so the commission could evaluate possible contributions or referrals to other resources.
