Director reports rising fall program revenue, near-complete court work and Claxton sod concerns amid drought

Stacy Mulroy, director of Park and Recreation, told commissioners that fall program registration opened the prior Wednesday and generated more than $20,000 in two days of online registrations. She said court badge sales and program registrations are likely to increase as more programs begin and that some signature events (for example, a Spooky Walk) typically draw higher participation than early tallies suggest.
On capital work, Mulroy said the contractor has begun the accessible platform at the football field and contractors working on the new tennis/pickleball courts are nearing completion; the department has posted wet-paint warnings and zip-tied gates to limit early use while surfaces cure.
Mulroy said the department had planned to open Claxton field soon but recent drought conditions and a town Level 1 water restriction have complicated sod establishment. She said the newly laid sod had effectively rooted but then showed heat damage and that irrigation exceptions for newly laid sod may be available; staff will meet with Department of Public Works (DPW) this week to determine whether additional watering or replanting is required to ensure the field survives the upcoming winter.
Commissioners asked for timelines on court completion and noted interest from schools to use outdoor classroom space while weather remains mild. Mulroy said she will check with the engineer for firm dates and report back.
