Deerfield Beach awards $225,000 in community participation grants to 20 local nonprofits

The City Commission approved recommendations Sept. 15 to award $225,000 under the FY 2026 Community Participation Grant (CPG) program to 20 local nonprofits after an evaluation process run by city staff. Community Services Director Jonathan Salas presented the program rationale: the CPG program centralizes one application window, aligns city funding to strategic priorities, and adds quarterly reporting and data requirements to improve accountability. The program allocation for FY 2026 was increased to $225,000 from the prior year. Staff recommended distribution across three focus areas: $144,250 for customer care and engagement (12 organizations, about 64% of the allocation), $48,025 for sustainable and environmental initiatives (2 organizations) and $53,000 for lifestyle‑quality initiatives (6 organizations). Director Salas said 20 applications had been received requesting approximately $431,000 in total; the evaluation committee recommended funding all 20 at reduced amounts to fit the city allocation. Representatives of several nonprofits attended to thank the commission and explain planned use of awards: Hispanic Unity of Florida (after‑school and health‑literacy programming in partnership with Deerfield Beach High School); 211 Broward (information and referral services and 988 crisis response); Deerfield Beach Housing Authority (emergency housing support); GFWC Women’s Club (water‑bottle reuse and school engagement); Billy Thompson Foundation (back‑to‑school and youth programs); Rotary Club of Deerfield Beach; Deerfield Beach Historical Society and others. Director Salas said earlier rounds of the program served more than 18,000 Deerfield Beach residents in the grant year. After public comment the commission approved the award recommendations and authorized staff to proceed with orientation meetings, contract execution and quarterly reporting required by the grant terms. Director Salas outlined next steps: awardee orientation, submittal of paperwork, contract execution in late October and quarterly performance reports due throughout the year.
