Ordinance committee reports progress on sign cleanup and dark-sky lighting rules

Mrs. Thompson, chair of the ordinance committee, updated the Select Board on the committee’s current work on amendments to Chapter 38 of the zoning code, including sign provisions and the lighting section.
Thompson said the committee submitted an amendment to the sign section that “mainly cleaned up all the language, removed redundancies and clears up some of the inconsistencies.” She said more controversial sign topics, such as internally illuminated signs, were intentionally left out of this round so they would not overshadow routine cleanup language. Thompson said that language submitted for the sign section is intended for public vote at the next annual town meeting, with the committee “hoping for next annual town meeting.”
On lighting, Thompson said the committee is working to support dark-sky compliance. She said a stakeholder suggested new language to strengthen standards, and the committee is reviewing that input to ensure changes “fit well with the overall intent and are effective.” She advised that the committee will bring a recommendation when ready and noted the committee may accelerate work depending on the comprehensive plan.
The board received the update; no formal action was taken at the meeting.
