Council adopts resolution honoring Sterling Heights Stamping Plant on 60th anniversary

The Sterling Heights City Council unanimously adopted a resolution congratulating the Sterling Stamping Plant (Stellantis) on its 60th anniversary during Tuesday’s meeting.
Why it matters: Councilmembers and city staff said the plant has been a major employer and taxpayer for decades and cited recent capital investments and community support.
City Manager Mark Vanderpool said the stamping plant and related facilities have paid nearly $100 million in property taxes over the last two decades and employ roughly 2,000 people at the stamping facility (and thousands more across related Stellantis facilities nearby). "These facilities, we do not take for granted," Vanderpool said.
Valerie Knowles, manager of state and local government relations for Stellantis, and Greg "Butch" Bauer Jr., plant manager at Sterling Stamping Plant, addressed council. Bauer said the plant opened in 1965, occupies roughly 254 acres and is a 2.7 million‑square‑foot operating facility with 23 press lines and about 800 robots. He said Stellantis reinvested roughly $500 million over the last 15 years in the facility.
Councilmembers praised the plant’s community involvement and its economic contributions. Council adopted the resolution by motion and voted to present a certificate and photograph with plant representatives.
The action was a ceremonial resolution; no budgetary appropriation was reported.
