Council committee moves amendment to fire prevention code to remove vendor name and sunset clause

Fire Department staff said the ordinance change would remove Brycer (the third‑party vendor name in the existing ordinance) so the city is not required to reference a specific contractor in code. The department will continue to contract with a third‑party reporting vendor; staff said the current arrangement produces revenue for the city because the vendor charges service providers for reporting and the city receives quarterly reports and a portion of revenue. Removing the vendor name will allow the city to change vendors without returning to council to amend the ordinance every few years.
Staff said the amendment also removes the September 30 sunset clause so the reporting arrangement may remain in effect unless or until council chooses to modify it. Council members asked whether any contract change that required city payment would return to council; staff confirmed standard procurement rules apply and a contract that required city payment or exceeded thresholds would come back for council approval.
The ordinance was moved by Council Member Grace and seconded by Council Member Chris, and the committee forwarded it to the City Council regular agenda for approval.
