Public commenters press council to uphold full Constitution, allege misuse of city email

Harry Williamson told council members they have sworn an oath to defend the Constitution and said officials should not treat amendments as “disposable.” Aaron Knapp, who the clerk said had filed correspondence, asked the council to investigate what he described as a breach of trust after a staff member shared his emails with a council member; he said his messages had been characterized as “violent” by a council colleague and called that characterization “dangerous.”
A third speaker who identified himself as a veteran reiterated that the Constitution contains no footnotes to make amendments optional and said dismissing amendments for convenience is “to betray that sacrifice.”
Council voted 5–? to allow Knapp to speak after an initial procedural objection; the meeting record shows five council members voting to allow his second appearance and five named members cast the dissenting votes against allowing it (Spernowski, Nutt, Moon, Arroyo and Thornsberry voted no on that procedural motion). The speakers requested an investigation into the claimed disclosure of emails; the transcript records that Knapp filed a request “under Miss Mary Spernowski.”
