County authorizes bids for medical examiner garage and awards jail window reseal contract

Summit County’s Planning and Economic Development committee authorized the executive to advertise for bids to construct approximately a 900-square-foot garage addition to the Summit County Medical Examiner’s building in Akron and confirmed a separate Board of Control award to Western Waterproofing Company Inc. to reseal and paint jail exterior windows. Joe Eckenrove of the county Physical Plants Department said the medical examiner garage will use masonry construction with a stone facade to match the existing building and that the engineer’s estimate for the work is $600,000; the department will attempt to reduce cost by using some existing walls. “We’re seeking authorization to construct approximately a 900 square foot garage on the medical examiner’s existing building,” Eckenrove said. On the jail windows project, Eckenrove said the county received three bids and Western Waterproofing submitted the low responsive bid. The work will reseal and paint roughly 600–700 jail exterior windows; the resolution lists the contract amount as not to exceed $154,282. The committee voted to advance both measures; the authorization to advertise for bids begins the procurement process for the medical examiner project, while the Western Waterproofing contract will proceed under the Board of Control award.
