Sheriff—s office gains new detective captain and receives AG grant for holsters and red-dot sights

The McPherson County Sheriff—s Office announced a personnel promotion and a state grant during the Sept. 15 commissioners meeting. The board approved the personnel changes and accepted notice of a grant that will supply holsters and red-dot sights to deputies.
Sheriff—s office leadership told the board that Jeffrey Schmidt was promoted to detective captain to lead investigations; the promotion was effective Sept. 14, 2025, and includes a step increase to a 23f pay grade and a salary of $3,465 (as stated in the personnel item). The board moved and approved the promotion.
The sheriff also reported a grant from the Kansas attorney general—s office (identified in the meeting as Chris Kobach—s office) that will cover 13 holsters and 13 red-dot optic sights for department handguns, with an estimated value of about $7,000. Department staff said the optics will be distributed so all deputies will have the devices and that the equipment is expected to improve shooting scores and training outcomes.
The board also approved a personnel change for a deputy identified in the minutes as Taylor Pyrus (effective Sept. 14, 2025). The motions to approve the personnel items were made and the chair noted the motions carried.
