At the Sept. 12 Prescott Preservation Commission meeting staff provided procedural updates and requested an additional meeting for a resubmission on the Plaza Hotel project. Alex Bramlett, planning manager, said the City Council is expected to consider the appointment of Mike King on Sept. 23; if approved, King would join the commission. Bramlett asked commissioners to consider a special meeting the week of Oct. 20 to give an outside consultant time to review a Plaza Hotel resubmission because the city’s historic preservation specialist remains unavailable.
“We are asking for a special meeting if possible… I will throw out to see if maybe Monday, October 20 works for anyone,” Bramlett said. Commissioners tentatively agreed to meet Monday, Oct. 20 at 9 a.m., pending room availability and confirmation.
Bramlett also updated the commission on an outstanding item, HP23009 (a Goodwin house), noting that required fence/pergola work appeared not to be completed and staff would verify compliance and follow up. During the meeting Commissioner Rick Kummery recused himself from further participation on one project, explaining, “I have to recuse myself because I did work for the architect that's on the project, and I have a little more familiarity with the project.”
Why it matters: The special meeting is intended to allow time for a consultant review of a large resubmission (Plaza Hotel) while the city lacks an on-staff historic specialist. The commission’s calendar decision affects when commissioners and the public can review substantial design changes to prominent downtown properties.
Other operational notes: Bramlett said staff will contact SHPO about its state historic conference and monitor potential funding impacts; staff will also confirm whether the applicant for HP23009 completed required exterior changes. No new policy or budget allocations were made at the Sept. 12 meeting.
The commission agreed to tentatively schedule a special meeting for Monday, Oct. 20, 9 a.m., subject to room availability and confirmation. If City Council confirms Mike King’s appointment on Sept. 23 he would be eligible to participate in future commission meetings.
