MORAGA, Calif. — A representative of the UC Master Gardener program told the Moraga Town Council on Sept. 10 about a planned Firewise demonstration landscape at Station 42, a visible site the group will use to teach residents firewise gardening practices.
Steve Danziger, representing the UC Master Gardeners, said the Moraga-Orinda Fire District (MOFD) board approved the project on Aug. 20 and provided $5,000 to get the work started. Danziger said the design will include multiple landscape treatments — including native-plant areas, Mediterranean-style plantings and hardscape demonstrations — and a required educational component with at least quarterly classes on firewise landscaping and home hardening.
Danziger said the group is partnering with local organizations and suppliers; he named the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) as a potential supporter that has signaled interest in contributing toward irrigation costs. He said local nurseries and hardware stores will be asked for donations and that the Moraga Garden Club has been contacted about volunteer help.
Council members and staff suggested scheduling a future agenda presentation when a draft plan is ready. Town staff and Danziger agreed to coordinate returning to a council meeting so the group can present a plan and answer questions. A staff member also suggested the group consider creating how-to video content; Danziger said UC Master Gardeners maintain a YouTube channel with relevant material and will discuss additional digital outreach with the volunteer team.
Danziger also was acknowledged for his service on the Moraga-Orinda Fire District board.
