The Delaware County Board of Commissioners approved three-year renewals of memorandums of understanding and intergovernmental agreements that assign Delaware County sheriff deputies to several local school districts and the Delaware Area Career Center.
The action, recorded as Resolution 25-725, continues agreements to station deputies and a sergeant at participating schools with a 50% cost-share paid by the schools, the county said at its Sept. 8 meeting.
“These agreements are for three-year renewals of the agreements we already have,” McElroy, the finance director for the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, told the commissioners. “They’re updating the wage that we are paying our deputies, still with 50% paid by the schools for each deputy and sergeant that are in those schools.”
The items listed in the motion include assignments to Big Walnut Local Schools, Olentangy Local Schools, Buckeye Valley Local Schools and the Delaware Area Career Center, as read into the record by the clerk.
Commissioners thanked sheriff’s office staff for maintaining the school resource officer program. Commissioner Lewis remarked that the schools “really value these resource officers.” Commissioners Merrill and Lewis each voted aye and the motion passed.
Why this matters: school resource officer agreements define roles and funding for law enforcement presence in schools. The continuation and wage update affect county payroll and school budgets.
Details and next steps: the agreements are three-year renewals; the school districts will continue to pay half of wages for deputy positions and the sergeant assigned under the MOUs. The board approved the resolution and will continue implementation through the sheriff’s office.
