Committee renews dark-fiber lease with MetroNet as backup to county-owned network

The King County Administration Committee on Sept. 10 approved a three-year renewal of a dark-fiber lease with MetroNet LLC to serve as a secondary fiber route for a county location that does not sit on the county's own fiber network. Charles Lasky of the IT department said most county sites are on county-owned fiber, but MetroNet provides a backup for the Third Street Courthouse and other critical services. "MetroNet gives us a secondary option, so we have a backup to keep critical services running here and at, the Third Street Courthouse," Charles Lasky said. The packet listed TMP-25-1095 with an annual cost of $16,008 for a three-year term. Lasky said the renewal was budgeted and recommended approval because it was a multiyear renewal under the committee's approval threshold for contracts. Committee members asked about solicitations to lease county fiber; Lasky told the committee staff are speaking with potential customers but had not yet obtained new interest. The committee approved the renewal on a roll-call vote.
