Committee approves countywide flooring contract; staff to coordinate trip-hazard repairs

The King County Administration Committee on Sept. 10 approved a resolution authorizing a flooring and carpeting contract for building management, giving staff a pool of vendors to use as needed rather than obligating immediate spend. Kevin Harris, who presented the item, said the contract provides the county flexibility to address worn or damaged flooring that creates trip hazards. "We have some flooring in parts of the county where we have significant tripping hazards, because the flooring is peeling up and really rolling upward... This, gives us as much as we can go forth and use, to fix those as we need to," Harris said. Roger Fonstock noted the county also performs concrete repairs for outside trip hazards and that substantial offsets (examples mentioned: two inches) are a liability concern. "We do concrete work to fix, like, outside concrete trip hazards... at 2 inches, it's a liability," Fonstock said. Committee members recommended better coordination with the county risk department to identify and consolidate trip-hazard reports. The packet listed the procurement as TMP-25-11099 with an approximate annual ceiling of about $200,000; the measure carried on a roll-call vote. Staff said using an on-call contract does not obligate immediate expenditures but provides an authorized list of vendors when flooring or concrete repairs are needed.
