District presents AI guidance for teachers and students; board discusses electives and digital literacy

District staff presented an AI guidance document Tuesday that interprets the district’s AI policy into classroom practice using a stoplight model: red (prohibited), yellow (restricted with teacher guidance) and green (permitted under teacher direction). The guidance lists acceptable uses such as grammar and mechanics corrections (analogous to spell‑check/Grammarly) and disallowed uses such as using generative AI to create substantive student writing or content without attribution. Administrators said the guidance grew from conference training and district‑level work and is intended to help teachers explain appropriate AI use to students and parents. Board members and staff discussed whether the district should offer electives on AI and cybersecurity; administrators said the district’s AP computer science principles course already includes some AI content and that business electives teach Microsoft/Google productivity tools. Staff suggested parent training sessions and professional development so teachers and families can try tools and learn fact‑checking practices. The board did not adopt new curriculum but asked administrators to continue integrating AI guidance and consider professional development and parent outreach.
