Academy highlights student programs: robotics growth, college fair trip, attendance efforts and well-being center activity

Directors and program leads updated the board on student programs and services, including robotics enrollment, a college-fair trip, textbook distribution and attendance and well-being initiatives.

Robotics: Director of robotics Mister Brophy said the district has 123 students in sixth through 12th grade robotics programs across FLL, FTC and FRC and noted a recent kickoff event with about 25 students and roughly 90 teams in the region. He described strong student participation at recent meetings and outreach events.

College fair and Williams Walk: The director of educational services reported that four secondary counselors accompanied five seniors to a college fair in Pasadena with more than 200 colleges and universities represented; staff are conducting a Williams Walk to ensure every student has textbooks for each subject after shortages last year.

Attendance and well-being: Director of student services Mister Wagner said principals are running attendance contests and reward programs for National Attendance Month. Director of health services Miss Fleming and staff reported the well-being center has been busy during suicide-awareness month with daily tabling events and counselor collaboration; the front office lights were lit in teal to mark awareness activities.

Why it matters: these program updates reflect student engagement, college preparation opportunities and health-and-wellness services during a busy part of the school year. Most reports were informational; no board action was reported on the program items.

Next steps: staff will continue outreach, contest incentives, textbook distribution and counseling services; a WNBA game and robotics events were noted as upcoming student activities.
