"We are bringing this funding, back home, to you all, this year, in the amount of $1,600,000," Jones told the council during a special presentation. Representative Felicia Robinson described the award as funding to address the recurring drainage problems in Leslie Estates: "we're talking about the drainage issue that happens in the Lesley Estates area when it rains and stuff like that. The city has been tackling that for some time, but now we're gonna have some additional funds so that we can hopefully fix it altogether."
Jones summarized the session: his office filed 23 bills, eight received committee hearings, six passed the Senate and three were signed into law by the governor. He cited several specific items that passed this year. According to Jones, SB 14 delivered about $1.7 million in relief to the family of Peniel Javier, a youth leader who drowned in a recreational facility; SB 268 provides redaction protections so elected officials can redact home addresses and similar personal information for safety; and SB 1174 allows foster parents to carry a foster license when they relocate across jurisdictions.
Jones also described the 2025 budget totals and tax-relief measures: "we passed a 115,000,000,000 budget" with a roughly $1,300,000,000 tax-relief package. He urged residents and council members to pay attention to an expected mid-decade redistricting fight and to upcoming property-tax debates.
Council members praised the lawmakers for their work in Tallahassee and for bringing the Leslie Estates appropriation to Miami Gardens. The senators and representatives plan to continue outreach and scheduled legislative updates and listening events in the region.
No council action or votes were recorded on the presentation itself; the funding announcement was ceremonial and informational on the council's agenda.
