Ventura County emergency services urges preparedness; Autism Society offers workshops for people with disabilities

Patrick Maynard, director of emergency services for the Ventura County Sheriff epartment, told the Thousand Oaks City Council on Sept. 9 that disasters are becoming more frequent in Ventura County and emphasized a "whole community" approach to preparedness.
"It's not a matter of if they will happen. It's a matter of when," Maynard said, describing individual, business and government actions to prepare and pointing listeners to readyventuracounty.org and VC Alert for local preparedness information. He accepted a council proclamation recognizing National Preparedness Month and described regional coordination with county agencies and nonprofit partners.
In public comment, Brian Schumacher, advocacy and community impact manager for the Autism Society Ventura County, welcomed the proclamation and announced free emergency-preparedness workshops tailored to people with disabilities, families and organizations. Schumacher described workshops on Sept. 17 (5—p.m.) at Conejo Elementary and Oct. 17 (10 a.m. 12 p.m.) at the Thousand Oaks Library; attendees receive free sensory kits and go-bags and can register at autismventura.org.
Ending: City staff acknowledged the county partnership and provided contact information for preparedness resources; council accepted the proclamation honoring National Preparedness Month.
