Developers of the Ridgeville Farms senior housing project asked the Planning Commission on Sept. 9 to recommend changing a private entrance drive’s name to Ridgewood Way. Planning staff and engineers said the drive is private and that lots on the drive currently show Avon addresses; there are no occupied residences on the newly platted street.
Planning and Development Director Kim Lieber said the request arrived on the meeting day and that staff brought it to the commission for initial review because the road name could affect addressing and emergency services. City Engineer Evans noted the roadway is private and may not require replatting because there is no dedicated right‑of‑way. Assistant Law Director Morgan identified a municipal process in Chapter 10.22 for street or alley name changes that includes notifying abutting property owners and confirmed the commission should determine whether the drive is a street or private access before forwarding a recommendation.
Commissioners asked about existing similarly named places in the city. Building staff noted an entrance sign using the name Ridgewood exists for a mobile home park, but records showed that is not a street name on the official street list. Commissioners raised concerns about emergency response and mutual‑aid confusion if names duplicate existing references. There was no second to a motion to change the name; the item will be returned to a future agenda after staff confirms whether Chapter 10.22 applies and completes the notification steps.
