The motion passed on a 3-0 roll call: Dorianne (Aye), Brian (Aye) and John (Aye).
Board members said the adjustment was requested to stabilize a building department that staff described as being maintained by three retired employees working part time. Mark, a staff member who reviewed the memo for the board, said the interim position filled by Mr. Novak has lasted longer than anticipated and the department is working to complete a search for a permanent hire.
The board discussed whether approval required formal action by the Select Board under SAP section 16(h). One board member asked whether the Select Board must designate an authorized approver; Mark said he had already spoken with the Select Board chair, identified in the meeting as Mr. Dennington, and would place the item on the Select Board agenda Tuesday to inform them. "I'll put this on the agenda for the Select Board on Tuesday," Mark said.
Staff also described how building inspectors are paid. Mark said inspectors are paid per inspection ("60 per inspection" was cited in the meeting), that inspection times vary (some take 10 to 15 minutes, others 30 to 45 minutes), and that inspection compensation is currently charged to the building revolving fund.
The board's approval was explicit: the motion submitted at the meeting authorized the pay rate adjustment as described in the packet and invoked SAP section 16(h). The board recorded no amendments and no dissenting votes.
No timeline for replacing the interim commissioner was set at the meeting; staff said a search is underway and the board is considering how to structure the department for long-term sustainability.
