Broadhead sewer separation advances; council approves targeted brick-street repairs

Engineers reported that the Broadhead sewer separation project is under active construction, with work on the gravel access road near the Shartiers Creek Trail and a temporary trail closure in effect while crews work. The contractor plans to add crews in coming weeks and will begin sewer installation on Warren Street on Monday; the project completion target for that phase is Oct. 21. Engineer Larry Keenan told council work will move onto side streets to install storm sewers, curbing, sidewalks and road reconstruction. Keenan also provided a list of streets that will be repaved or receive trench/brick repairs after the sewer work, including sections of Crafton Boulevard, Broadhead, Warren, Park, Colter, Purnell, North Windwood, North Emily and Belvedere. Council approved a separate motion to repair four prioritized brick-street areas, concrete headers and curbs with an engineer-estimated cost of $75,782. Keenan described the work as removing depressed or subsiding brick, doing any needed subgrade repair, installing concrete base and sand bedding and re-laying brick; some locations also will get one‑foot concrete headers to protect joins between asphalt and brick. Keenan said the brick repairs include: 52 linear feet of new curb (estimate $3,640.40), 44 linear feet of concrete header (estimate $3,700) and 2,974 square feet of brick-street repair (estimate $68,004), with unit prices provided by a brick‑street contractor familiar with borough work. Council voted to proceed to bid on the selected areas; the motion passed with an affirmative voice vote recorded as "all in favor." No roll-call tally was provided in the transcript. Other sewer- and road-related items discussed included a long-standing ponding issue at the Southeast Steuben and Duncan intersection; staff said plans are in place to rebuild the ramp and modify asphalt to provide drainage and that crosswalks and pedestrian signs are proposed after ramp work.
