The Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School District Committee voted Sept. 9 to waive Policy GBEA’s staff-ethics restriction to allow the district to hire Sean Bridal for a social studies position; Bridal is the son of a current staff member at the school.
Superintendent Watson told the committee the hiring process produced several applicants — “normally somewhere around a dozen for social studies” — and that a multi-member screening team including HR, academic leadership, the department and DEI representatives recommended three finalists to the principal. Principal Williams recommended Sean Bridal to the superintendent. Watson said Bridal would not be supervised by his parent and that all three finalists held required teaching licenses.
An administrator explained the administration had raised the waiver to ensure transparency and to avoid any perception of impropriety. The committee moved, seconded and approved the waiver by voice vote. Committee members asked for clarification about the process and the number of applicants; the administration said it would continue to document the hiring steps and confirmed finalists were licensed.
