The Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School District Committee received an update Sept. 9 on its aviation program exploration and scheduled site visits to two established programs in October.
Superintendent Watson said the district will visit Greater Lawrence Technical School on Tuesday, Oct. 7, to tour a newly opened aviation program and examine the facility and its partnership with Lawrence Airport. Watson said the group will also visit Westfield Technical Academy, a program with about 11 years’ experience and an established relationship with the Westfield Airport, and that members of the district’s aviation subcommittee will join the visits.
Watson described the purpose as seeing program spaces, partnerships and how each program implemented curriculum and industry connections; the administration plans to report back to the full committee at the following meeting. Committee members discussed that different programs emphasize different elements — for example, flight instruction versus mechanics — and noted the visits would help the district determine which model to pursue.
No formal vote was required; the visits are exploratory and intended to inform the committee’s future work on any aviation program recommendation.
