District votes to pursue Chapter 74 construction craft-labor program and facility grant

The Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School District Committee voted Sept. 9 to authorize the administration to submit an intent to apply for a new Chapter 74 program in construction craft labor and to pursue a related facility-expansion grant.
Superintendent Watson told the committee the district will submit a letter of intent this week and prepare a full grant application due Oct. 30 for the facility-expansion grant, which will award up to $2,500,000 to eligible grantees. The program-planning discussion noted ongoing conversations with MassHire, the local workforce investment board, and the Construction Craft Laborers union; the union’s training affiliate LIONA in Hopkinton was named as an existing training partner.
A motion to support moving forward with the application was made, seconded and approved by the committee. The superintendent said administration had already begun drafting the grant application and would submit the letter of intent pending the committee vote.
Committee members asked no substantive follow-up questions at the meeting and the motion passed by voice vote. The administration will continue preparing the full grant application and related facility plans for the district’s review and any subsequent committee approvals.
