Commission plans biennial park reviews; aims to start field work in April

The New Brunswick Environmental Commission agreed to continue conducting park reviews on approximately a two-year cycle and tentatively planned to begin field assessments in April, using a checklist adapted from a prior strategic plan.

"I think we were doing it every 2 years," Denise said while reviewing the commission's history of park assessments. Commissioners noted prior reviews in 2016, 2018, and more recently in 2022 and 2024.

Commission members described the operational approach: split the city's parks list among volunteers, visit assigned parks, use a checklist originally prepared by the Trust for Public Land (modified by a prior commissioner named Charles), and compile scored reports to forward to the mayor's office. "We each take 2 or 3 parks...and there's actually a form that Charles, the previous share, was nice enough to put together," one commissioner explained.

The commission discussed timing and logistics. Members said they will prepare the review form by February, adapt it where appropriate for unique parks, and plan to perform on-the-ground reviews in April when weather is suitable. "I usually...we wanna do these reviews when the weather is nice...I don't think we would technically probably start them until...April," one member said.

Ending: The commission will contact a prior contributor (Charles) to obtain the review form, prepare a modified checklist by February, and aim to begin park reviews in April. The results will be compiled into a report to inform mayoral priorities and capital maintenance decisions.
