Wakefield football selected to play Thanksgiving game at Fenway Park; fall athletics report notes strong participation

Athletic Director Mike Murphy said the district had 363 registered student athletes for the fall season, across 11 sports and 19 teams, with several programs fielding junior-varsity and freshman squads. Murphy said he had recently met with about 95% of the school’s captains to discuss expectations and program culture and is launching a junior leadership group to mentor rising leaders.
On Fenway Park: Murphy said Wakefield’s Thanksgiving game against Melrose was chosen for a Fenway event that will include four games over two days; Wakefield’s was scheduled as the first game, a 5 p.m. kickoff on Nov. 25. He described the opportunity as a “once in a lifetime” experience for student-athletes and said logistics — including tickets distributed through the Fenway group and Major League Baseball platforms — are being coordinated. The committee discussed the unique nature of playing at Fenway and applauded students and staff.
Student perspective: Team captains told the committee they were excited. Molly Anderson and Stella Carlino spoke as girls soccer captains about the team’s connection after losing senior players last year. Football captains Mi Sanchez and Christian De Florio described the Fenway selection as an extraordinary opportunity for seniors and the program.
Other items: Captains presented Middlesex League passes for committee members; Murphy said the district would provide tickets for faculty and staff when requested.
