Presque Valley issues proclamations for Pitt Hopkins Syndrome Awareness Day and Constitution Week

Presque Valley — Mayor Kelpaguta proclaimed September 18 as Pitt Hopkins Syndrome Awareness Day in Presque Valley and September 17 through 20 as Constitution Week during the council meeting.
Tajana Lockmiller, who identified herself as the parent of a child with the condition, thanked the council and described Pitt Hopkins Syndrome (PTHS) as a rare genetic disorder caused by a TCF4 gene change that affects development, breathing, speech and cognition. "Right now, there are only 1,564 individuals worldwide who have been identified with Pitt Hopkins syndrome," Lockmiller said, and she noted 11 individuals in the speaker's home state.
The mayor read the proclamation language for Pitt Hopkins that encourages residents to learn more and support affected families. The proclamation text in the record ties the September 18 date to the eighteenth chromosome, which is the site of the mutation described in the proclamation.
Representatives of the Daughters of the American Revolution and local DAR chapter members addressed the council for Constitution Week. A speaker for that group recounted that DAR petitioned Congress in 1955, leading to a public law and a presidential proclamation marking Constitution Week; the transcript identifies the law as "Public Law 915" and states the resolution was signed in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Both proclamations were read into the record; the mayor closed the proclamations with an encouragement to the public to observe the designated dates.
