Department of Buildings ramps up ‘Get Sheds Down’ enforcement and permit improvements

The Department of Buildings provided an update on the mayor’s ‘‘Get Sheds Down’’ initiative, saying permit processing times have been reduced, enforcement actions and criminal summonses are being issued against long‑standing or noncompliant sheds, and allowable shed colors and illumination requirements have been revised.
Sam Shefter of the Department of Buildings said the agency is accelerating removal of dilapidated and long‑standing sheds and that permit turnaround times have improved. He said the allowable height limit for sheds has been raised to 12 feet, permit processing time targets have been shortened and permitted sheds will be required to increase lumens for better illumination.
Discussion only: no formal policy changes were adopted at the meeting; Buildings staff encouraged residents to file complaints and to use the agency’s upgraded permitting process.
