Sheriff outlines agency initiatives as board proclaims Sheriff’s Week

Sheriff Scott Cicero addressed the Allegheny County Board of Legislators on Sept. 11 as the board proclaimed Sheriff’s Week. Cicero reviewed recent and ongoing initiatives at the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office, including creation of a threat assessment group, officer wellness programs, expanded training, deployment of body cameras and Tasers obtained through grants, increased jail housing revenue, and enhanced support for local law enforcement.

“Every sheriff has a fundamental goal of leaving the office in better condition than they found it,” Cicero said. He told the board his office had established the Allegheny County Threat Assessment Group (ATAG), a wellness program and physical fitness facilities paid for through grant funding, and increased training in partnership with the Division of Criminal Justice Services. The sheriff also discussed a welfare‑fraud investigation unit created with the district attorney and Department of Social Services and said the agency had increased boat patrols on local lakes.

Cicero framed law enforcement as nonpartisan and appealed for community engagement, urging residents to run for local boards, volunteer, and attend meetings if they are concerned about local safety. “If you aren’t happy with what's happening in your community, do something about it,” Cicero said. He also condemned political violence, saying those who commit violent acts are criminals and should be dealt with as such.
