Capitola — The Capitola City Council on Sept. 11 presented a proclamation recognizing September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and honored the local nonprofit Jacob’s Heart for its family support work.
Lede: Mayor Clark read a proclamation and presented it to Heidi Boynton of Jacob’s Heart, who thanked the council and described the organization’s local services and family reach.
Context and what Jacob’s Heart does: Jacob’s Heart provides social and emotional support, transportation, groceries and direct financial assistance to families coping with pediatric cancer. Heidi Boynton told council that "Every day, 47 children are diagnosed with cancer. And just this year alone at Jacob's Heart, 51 new families have come to our family at Jacob's Heart, which was founded right here in Santa Cruz County." Later, Boynton said the organization serves "the 400 and almost 30 families that we serve in in Santa Cruz County and and all of the other surrounding counties." She thanked the city for the proclamation and for community support.
