The Gardena City Council on Sept. 9 directed staff to explore the feasibility of hosting fan‑zone or hospitality venues tied to upcoming large sporting events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Mayor Pro Tem Henderson introduced the directive, describing potential benefits such as short-term revenue for local businesses, increased sales tax, and opportunities to showcase Gardena’s multi-cultural businesses and restaurants. Councilmembers discussed two related concepts: a short-term “fan zone” focused on event viewing and crowd activities, and a hospitality/“house” model that could pursue longer-term international partnerships and business incubator opportunities modeled on programs in other cities. Councilmember Love asked the city manager and staff to connect with regional coordinating bodies (such as the South Bay Cities Council of Governments and LA28 organizers) and to examine existing examples, including hospitality houses and fan-zone programs used by neighboring cities. Councilmembers emphasized outreach to local businesses and the need to assess costs, permitting, security and logistical needs. The council agreed the item should proceed so staff could report back with feasibility, recommended scope, and next steps. This action is a directive to staff to study feasibility and report back; no budget or contract was approved at the Sept. 9 meeting.
