Lapeer County veteran services director reports growth in appointments, transportation and emergency aid

Tom, director of Lapeer County Veteran Services, told the Board of Commissioners on Sept. 11 that in his six years leading the office the department has substantially expanded service capacity. "We have done just over 7,000 office appointments. We've received almost 30,000 phone calls. We've had almost 3,200 walk ins," he said, and added that the office has grown its transportation fleet from one vehicle to five and its volunteer driver corps from three to nearly 20. The director said volunteers have driven "almost 300,000 miles" during his tenure. He also said the office has distributed emergency assistance to veterans "totaling almost $245,000" and recorded slightly more than 1,700 new veterans served since he took the job. Commissioner remarks following the report praised staff and noted county millages that support the service. "We have a remarkably dedicated staff," Commissioner (first name not given) said during discussion, thanking the director. The director invited residents to upcoming veteran-focused events and said constituents can find information on the office Facebook page or call the department.
