The Fraser City Council on Sept. 11 approved procurement of 33 Glock 9mm handguns configured with MOS red-dot optics, light rails, new holsters and ammunition. The police presenter said the department sought the upgrade to reduce recoil, improve accuracy and to modernize equipment; the package also includes trade-in offers for the department’s current weapons.
"The weapon will hold more rounds, but with, less recoil, less impact on, the person using or shooting the gun," the presenter said during the meeting, explaining the operational advantages and training improvements the department expects from a 9mm MOS package.
Council discussion covered the number of guns, buyback value and whether the chief’s count of sworn officers included the chief. Staff told council they budgeted for the package during the budget process and that the vendor (CMP) offered a buyback of $200 per weapon for the department’s current pistols, which reduces net cost. Council member Baranski moved to approve the purchase at $34,287.68 in one motion; a subsequent motion and mayoral reading included a net cost figure of about $34,002.87 as recorded in the meeting minutes. Council approved the purchase.
Staff said officers will be offered the opportunity to buy their off‑duty weapons if they wish; otherwise CMP has agreed to buy them back. The presenter said ammunition was included in the quoted package and that the purchase will be funded from the budgeted line item for weapons and training equipment.
