Nogales library outlines teen workshops, book project and new weekly activities

Victor, a library staff member, told the Board about recent and planned teen programming at Nogales-area branches, including art sessions, a motivational workshop and weekly movie nights with popcorn. He said a recent youth art activity drew about 35 attendees and that staff appreciated volunteer help with cleanup.

Victor described a motivational workshop led by Santos Yezkas aimed at teaching teens income-generating activities, and he said the library will host recurring arts-and-crafts sessions scheduled to fit students' release times from charter schools. He also summarized a teen book-writing project led by local author Maritza (Maritza Helene Iguera, as identified in the meeting) intended to produce a book for possible display at the University of Arizona Book Festival if students meet a September 30 deadline. "As long as the teens have met their deadline, I think we will," a staff member said about taking the finished book to the festival.

Staff said Rio Rico is piloting new Saturday programming (Vinyl Club and other activities) and that they welcome board help spreading the word in outlying communities. Attendance and scheduling considerations shaped program times: Victor explained the 2 p.m. start times accommodate students from multiple charter schools who are dismissed at different hours.

No formal board action was taken; the item was an informational update and staff indicated they will keep the board informed about program participation and outreach to surrounding communities.
