WELLINGTON, Colo. — Parks staff told the advisory board Sept. 10 that they have received a full estimate and will move forward with repairing a damaged slide at Wellington Community Park (WCP).
"We officially got the full estimate, and we're moving forward with repairing the slide at WCP," said Billy Coates, team manager for the parks department.
Coates said staff filed an insurance claim and expect an insurance payout that will be depreciated because the equipment is about 10 years old: "You know, it is depreciated because it is 10 years old, so it's not like we're gonna get the full amount, but that's just how insurance works." He said the vendor aims to ship parts later this month and preliminarily scheduled installation for the second or third week of October.
The board also heard that staff has ordered engineered wood fiber to refill playground surfacing at Sunrise and Park Meadows and that leftover material may be used at Viewpoint. Public-works coordination is under way to address drainage and safety in the I-25 underpass: staff have installed fish-eye mirrors at the underpass approaches and are working with public works to secure a sump pump and electrical improvements to reduce standing water.
Why it matters: Repairs affect public safety and park availability. The slide repair and surfacing renewals are immediate maintenance items that could require temporary closures and coordination with insurance and public-works crews.
Next steps: Coates and staff will proceed with the contractor schedule for slide replacement, continue refilling playground surfacing across parks, and coordinate underpass drainage work with public works. Staff said they will update the board on installation dates and any temporary closures required during repairs.
