Doctor John Asplin of District 205 provided a brief video update Friday from the nearly finished Galesburg Athletic Facility, showing construction progress and saying new weight equipment should be installed and usable "roughly the November 1."
The update focused on the facility’s key spaces: an infield hitting-bay area for baseball and softball, an open area for other athletic teams and physical education, a large wrestling practice area "that will be raised up" and covered wall to wall with wrestling mats, a weight room expected to be furnished in about "5, 6 weeks," and a nearly finished warehouse. "What you are looking at right now behind me is the infield hitting Bay area for baseball and softball," Asplin said in the video.
Why it matters: The spaces described are intended for junior high and high school athletics and physical education in District 205 and will affect student practices and team facilities once equipment and finishing work are complete. Asplin said the weight room equipment will be installed in the coming weeks and available starting roughly Nov. 1, giving a target date for expanded indoor training capacity.
Details from the video: Asplin walked viewers through the northwest side of the facility, noting the wrestling practice area is “very large” and intended for junior high and high school boys and girls. He said the weight room is currently an open space and "it'll be filled in about 5, 6 weeks with new weight lifting equipment that we're gonna be then able to use starting roughly the November 1." He also noted workers were pouring concrete outside and that the warehouse area is nearly finished.
Asplin used the update to remind the community about Homecoming activities. He said the Homecoming Parade is downtown on the regular route and scheduled to start at 4:15 p.m., the freshman game begins at 5 p.m., the varsity game at about 7 p.m., and the Homecoming Dance follows the next day. He also advised residents to stay hydrated during warmer-than-usual weather, saying temperatures were expected to reach the mid-90s in the next couple of days.
This was a short, informational update rather than a formal board meeting: the video presented construction progress, timelines and community event reminders but did not include motions, votes or formal district actions. Asplin signed off the message by noting the day and date.
