The committee voted unanimously to forward a request to solicit bids for electrical services for city facilities to the Sept. 16 consent agenda.
Parks and Facilities Manager George Richin told the committee that the parks and facilities department maintains a large portfolio of buildings — city hall, community centers, athletic fields and support facilities — and that complex electrical systems increasingly require licensed electricians for troubleshooting, upgrades and emergency repairs. He said routine work can be handled in‑house but that licensed contractors are needed for advanced troubleshooting, code‑level upgrades and rapid emergency response to outages affecting lighting, HVAC, security systems and irrigation controls.
Richin said the item is budgeted in the parks department repair and maintenance accounts and that staff expects to solicit a multi‑year contract; he estimated a three‑year contract on the order of $300,000. Committee members asked whether the city has licensed electricians on staff (staff said it does not) and whether hiring a staff electrician had been considered (staff said market pay for licensed electricians would be difficult to sustain in‑house). The committee approved forwarding the solicitation request to council.
