Parents urge transparency as Wilkinson Elementary's future is raised during Welland Park boundary hearing

Several Wilkinson Elementary parents and community members used the Welland Park attendance-boundary hearing to press the district for transparency about the future of Wilkinson Elementary School. Commenters said they first learned about the possibility of closing Wilkinson at a district workshop and urged the board to involve families and taxpayers earlier in any decision. “I stand here as a proud parent and a Wilkinson Wildcat advocate,” said Jodana Osceola, who asked the board to provide clarity on timelines and community involvement. Osceola said Wilkinson “is a cornerstone of our community” and described it as “a nationally certified STEAM program,” asking that the school be given opportunities to continue building partnerships. Mary Compton told the board the Wilkinson community “was never officially brought into the decision making” and said surveys and public input should precede any plan. “The citizens of Sarasota County never had the opportunity to study or offer alternatives to the heartless decision to close a beloved neighborhood school,” she said. Superintendent Connor responded to the Wilkinson remarks by saying the Wilkinson potential closure was not part of that night’s agenda. He reiterated that the Welland Park hearing was focused on attendance boundaries tied to the new high school and that any conversations about Wilkinson would be handled through the appropriate processes and meetings. Speakers asked for opportunities to meet with district staff and to be notified of any formal proposals affecting Wilkinson. The public commenters framed Wilkinson’s programs, community events and free-or-reduced-lunch population as reasons to continue investing in the school; the district did not present a timeline or a formal proposal for Wilkinson at the hearing. No formal action on Wilkinson was taken at the hearing.
