Finance committee backs resolution supporting Senate Bill 333 to raise municipal court fee cap

On Sept. 9, 2025, the City Finance Committee voted to draft a resolution supporting 2025 Senate Bill 333, legislation that would increase the range of municipal court fees that can be assessed on citations. Staff told the committee that under current state statutes the city may retain $38 of court-related fees and remit $5 to the state for administrative oversight; the current local fee level has not changed since 2013.
The proposed Senate bill would modify the court fee range to permit municipalities to set a court fee "not less than $42 and not more than $51," with the municipal judge determining the fee composition under the bill's structure. A staff member said the change would help the city recover rising court-related costs such as judge and clerk time, building security, and new software that have increased since 2013.
Alder Tierney moved to draft and forward a resolution in support of Senate Bill 333; Alder Watson seconded. The motion carried by voice vote. Staff said the resolution would be sent to the city council to register the city's support for the state legislation.
