Templeton CPC backs $5,900 for senior-center community garden expansion

The application, submitted by the Templeton Agricultural Commission and presented by Carrie (Agricultural Commission representative), asks for $5,880 to add 10 metal raised beds, soil, trellis, a composter, watering equipment, landscape fabric and a small shed for tool storage; the committee rounded the request to $5,900 for accounting. The project will be managed by a volunteer citizens’ group (not a nonprofit) that the Commission will convene; the beds are intended for town residents and senior-center users as an intergenerational, recreational garden. The presenter said most labor is volunteer and that she applied to the Community Foundation for Central Massachusetts for a small matching grant (award notification expected in October).
Committee members noted that community gardens are an eligible recreation use under the CPA’s open-space/recreation category, and they suggested securing a letter of support from the senior center and confirmation that the select board (as landowner) approves the project site. The committee approved forwarding $5,900 from open space for the project and assigned the Agricultural Commission as the responsible party to manage implementation and procurement details. The motion passed in the roll call: Dennis yes; George yes; Joanne yes; Carrie yes.
If approved at town meeting, grantees must follow standard reimbursement procedures and provide invoices and evidence of public access; any unspent funds will revert to the CPA.
