Commission awards seed and fertilizer bid, hears road-paving and striping updates

Covington County approved a bid for seed and fertilizer and heard a detailed roads update at the Sept. 9 commission meeting.

County maintenance staff recommended awarding the seed and fertilizer bid to Annalise and Farmers Co‑op after only one bid was received. Staff noted prices had fallen compared with the previous year—citing decreases on bagged Bermuda and Pensacola Bahia seed—so staff recommended approval despite a single bid. The commission approved the award by voice vote.

Public works staff member Mr. Rawls gave a multi‑point update on projects across the county: service-treatment (surface treatment) work could begin next week on selected roads once widening and shaping are finished; Jackstown and Hogfoot Road widening were completed; bridge final plans were pending Alabama DOT plan approval; clearing work is mostly done and a power pole relocation is pending an electric company schedule; Bush‑hogging was planned for Friday in District 3; herbicide spraying and right‑of‑way trimming were underway on several county roads, including County Road 20, Union Grove Road and work around Beulah and Roslyn Ridge areas.

Commissioner Tommy said he would allocate the remainder of his contingency funds for additional road striping and moved to approve the reallocation; Commissioner Lynn seconded the motion and it passed by voice vote. County staff said last year the funds produced about six to seven miles of striping.

The commission recorded no contract amendments to the seed/fertilizer award at the meeting.
