Council authorizes purchase of hot-box trailer to expand in-house asphalt repairs

Public Works staff requested and the council approved purchase of a two-ton hot-box trailer (Kilometers International model) through the Sourcewell cooperative purchasing program for use in pothole and asphalt repairs.
Public Works staff explained that the city budgeted for the base model but underestimated the attachments and accessories required for the unit to function as intended. Staff reported a funding shortfall of approximately $37,000 and proposed covering that shortfall with Transportation Development Act (TDA) funds. The total purchase price presented to council was $62,389.05 (vendor Craftco / K&M International via Sourcewell contract).
The hot-box will allow crews to heat and hold hot-mix asphalt in the field to make lasting repairs instead of relying on temporary cold-mix patches and recurring contractor work. Staff said the purchase includes vendor training for city crew members and that the trailer will reduce future contracted pavement-repair costs over time.
Council voted to authorize allocation of TDA funds to cover the shortfall and to approve the purchase through Sourcewell; the motion carried unanimously.
