Maryville Town Council on Sept. 9 adopted a council declaration recognizing National Sea Tracks Think Train Week from Sept. 15 to Sept. 20, 2025, as a community awareness effort on rail-crossing safety.
Police Chief Costanoussis read the council's declaration, highlighting national statistics cited in the text: the declaration said that in 2024 there were 2,250 rail grade-crossing collisions in the United States resulting in 268 fatalities and 749 personal injuries, and that pedestrian trespassing incidents in 2024 resulted in 821 pedestrian deaths and 644 injuries. The declaration references partner organizations including the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Operation Lifesaver Inc., and the U.S. Department of Transportation and thanks the Canadian National Railway Company (CN) for support.
Chief Costanoussis urged residents to remain vigilant at crossings and called the week a reminder that rail safety starts with awareness. The council approved the proclamation by voice vote; the chief and council encouraged residents and first responders to reinforce safety messages during the designated week.
