The Brentwood Public Works Committee voted to authorize Castle Contracting to perform erosion repairs at the Brentwood Park destination playground, including concrete runnels and additional inlets, after staff said a contractor estimate is “about $40,000.” Committee members and Parks staff said the work would channel surface runoff away from the new play area, protect the poured-in-place surface from mulch displacement and reduce lingering maintenance issues after rain events. Parks staff also said they plan to plant larger landscaping in the fall to guide pedestrian movement and reduce damage to plantings. Committee members said the work is timely because the playground has been monitored for roughly a year and staff have observed channels forming near the hill slide and mulch washing onto play surfaces. "There's water runoff on the hill slide, and it's kinda cutting a channel right next to it," Parks staff member Eric said, recommending a "concrete runnel" into a drain. He added that designers and the on-call contractor provided proposals and pricing. Parks staff said the repairs would be paid from funds saved from a parking-lot project. "We've basically with this, we'll have spent about $160,000 of that $400,000. So there's still money left that's including this $40,000," Eric said. He told the committee staff will handle fall plantings themselves if the planting costs rise. The committee asked for drawings before the Board of Aldermen considers the project. "Could you provide drawings of when you say, concrete, like, what the con... where that exactly goes with, like, diagrams or pictures?" one alderman requested. Eric confirmed SWT provided drawings and said he would walk the board through them when the item is presented to the Board of Aldermen. A motion to proceed with Castle Contracting was made and seconded; the committee approved the work by voice vote. Committee members recorded no roll-call tally in the meeting record. Staff will bring the design drawings and the contract recommendation to the Board of Aldermen for final authorization and to confirm funding details.
