Athens will hold a family-friendly Halloween block party on Court Street on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 1 to 4 p.m., the mayor said during the weekly update. The event will be between Union and Washington streets and will feature music, crafts, games and candy.
Neighborhood trick-or-treating is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 31, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the mayor said, and residents are encouraged to keep porch lights on and have children under 12 accompanied by a parent. "For children under the age of 12, they need to be accompanied by a parent," the mayor said.
The mayor urged families to wear brightly colored clothing or carry flashlights to improve visibility as it gets darker, and reminded drivers to slow down and be vigilant for children crossing intersections.
The weekly update listed neighborhoods where trick-or-treating typically occurs, including the South Side, Oakmont, Canterbury, Coventry, the West Side, the Far East and Near East neighborhoods and possibly North Hill. No city permits, road closures, or public-safety staffing levels for the events were announced during the update.
