The Simpson Avenue bridge will be closed overnight Friday, Oct. 24, from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. so contractors can pour the remaining concrete decking, Mayor said during the city s weekly update. The mayor said the bridge work is on track to be finished by Thanksgiving.
The Simpson Avenue closure is expected to be a short, full closure in the early-morning hours; the mayor said traffic will be allowed to return after 9 a.m. that day. "It will be closed Friday, October 24 from 2AM to 9AM," the mayor said.
Madison Avenue will remain closed through Halloween, Oct. 31, while crews complete work to make the crossing at East State Street ADA accessible, the mayor said. "Madison Avenue closure is extended. That'll be through Halloween, October 31," the mayor said.
The announcements were part of the mayor s regular weekly update and did not include a discussion or vote by the Athens City Council. No funding amounts, contractor names or traffic detour details were provided in the update.
City residents who rely on the Simpson Avenue crossing or Madison Avenue access should plan alternate routes during the specified closures and check for further updates from city engineering or public works.
