The Grand County Commission unanimously approved a resolution supporting the Moab Chamber of Commerce's Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) initiative to identify, sign and market routes for beginner, intermediate and advanced users.
The initiative: The chamber plans a multi-phase project to identify existing routes, improve wayfinding and provide visitor information about difficulty levels; the first phase is route identification and mapping. The chamber has proposed working with local OHV clubs and the BLM where federal permissions are necessary.
County role: The commission agreed to provide limited county staff support to the volunteer Moab Chamber OHV advisory committee to check and prepare GIS data for proposed routes. Commissioners authorized a capped county contribution not to exceed $1,501 to cover up to 40 hours of staff time and incidental costs for the county's OHV coordinator to assist with mapping and data checks.
Why it matters: Proponents said clearer route designation helps safety and visitor experience and can reduce conflicts by directing visitors to appropriate routes. Several users at citizens-to-be-heard supported the idea, and the chamber outlined plans to phase signage and trailhead improvements.
Vote and outcome: Commissioner Hadeem moved to adopt the resolution and to authorize staff support up to $1,501; Commissioner McGahn seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
Next steps: The chamber will convene an advisory group and coordinate with the county's OHV coordinator and BLM staff. Any work requiring federal approvals will follow the BLM's procedures and public process.
