Gilbert proclaims October observances for domestic violence awareness, breast cancer and community planning

The Town of Gilbert proclaimed three October observances during its Oct. 14 council meeting, recognizing domestic violence awareness, breast cancer awareness and Community Planning Month.

Domestic violence: The council received a presentation from Keith Bradshaw, counseling manager for Gilbert Youth and Adult Resources, and chairman of the town’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month Committee. Bradshaw described the multidisciplinary community partnerships that support survivors and said the town responded to 1,942 domestic-violence calls for service last year, resulting in 1,700 victims. He highlighted Gilbert’s Family Advocacy Center — described as about 50 percent complete — and invited the community to the third annual Domestic Violence Awareness event at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 23 outside Town Hall. The proclamation emphasized the town’s regional coordination through the Maricopa Association of Governments’ domestic-violence subcommittee.

Breast cancer awareness: Vice Mayor Bobby Buckley read a proclamation recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Local speakers included Angela Knutson, who described her own diagnosis, and Dr. Angela Savrimuthu of Dignity Health Cancer Institute, who urged timely screening and early detection. The proclamation encouraged mammograms beginning at age 40 (earlier for higher risk) and recognized local clinical services and survivor support.

Community Planning Month: Councilmember Monte Lyons introduced the planning team and read a proclamation noting National Community Planning Month and the town’s adoption of the 2020 general plan. The proclamation recognized appointed planning commissioners and town planners for their role in implementing the town’s vision for housing, transportation and land-use choices.
